As part of our ISDE 40th Anniversary celebration, you’ll read in upcoming months about each of the ISDE Congresses. This article summarizes the 15th and 16th ISDE World Congresses.

The 15th ISDE World Congress was held in Singapore in 2016 (Figure 1) in close conjunction with the Formula 1 autoracing competition (Figure 2). This overlap in events attracted a number of registrants who came for the F-1 race and stayed for the Congress. This was the ISDE’s first meeting in East Asia outside of Japan, and was hailed as a big success. The Congress was presided over by the ISDE President, Prof. Ken Wang (Figure 3). The city provided a very relaxed multicultural experience, as exemplified by the Congress Dinner venue in the Singapore Gardens (Figure 4). Casual exploration of the wide variety of foods and cultures was a frequent pastime of attendees (Figures 5A, 5B).

The 16th ISDE World Congress took place in Vienna, Austria, in September 2018, with a notable opening ceremony featuring local classical music and dancing (Figure 6), and the venue was the University of Vienna (Figure 7), a venerated institution famous for graduates such as Freud, Mahler, Gödel, Paracelsus, and Schrödinger. The ISDE President was Professor Yuko Kitagawa (Figure 8). The attendance was the largest recorded for an ISDE World Congress (Figure 9), the scientific program was diverse and interesting, and the weather was excellent, permitting outdoor display of the scientific posters (Figure 10). The venue for the gala dinner featured the spectacular Vienna City Hall (Figure 11).

The approach to managing achalasia has been streamlined, but management of non-achalasia motility disorders remains challenging. The ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) hosted a virtual presentation focused on the evaluation and management of non-achalasia motility disorders moderated by Michael Vaezi, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, USA.

During this 60-minute presentation panelists discussed opioid induced esophageal dysfunction, non-achalasia spastic disorders (jackhammer, distal esophageal spasm), and hypomotility disorders (ineffective esophageal motility and esophageal aperistalsis).

The ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus) hosted a virtual presentation on functional heartburn and reflux hypersensitivity, commonly encountered but often overlooked. During this 60-minute presentation Ronnie Fass presented two functional esophageal disorders that are common, yet often overlooked, and play an important role in diagnosing and managing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Joan Chen followed up with two cases to help illustrate these disorders and questions were answered from a live audience. This live presentation was recorded on July 29, 2021, moderated by Bradley Kendall.

The 13th ISDE World Congress was held in Venice, Italy, in October 2012 (Figure 1). It was presided over by Professors Ermanno Ancona, Giovanni Zaninotto, and Francesco Di Mario (Figure 2). The ISDE President was Prof. Jan Tack (Figure 3). The venue, on Venice Lido, a barrier island, was very relaxed and historic (Figure 4). Transportation to the main island and other interesting locations was done by a variety of public and private water taxis, a very fun and romantic way to get about. Local members from the internationally renowned esophagology centers in Padua and Milan as well as other centers in Italy represented their country well. Known as “The gate for the East,” Venice welcomed strong representation from the Middle and Far East. Social highlights of the Venice meeting included entertainment in traditional dress (Figure 5) and delicious local cuisine.

The 14th ISDE World Congress took place in Vancouver, Canada, in September 2014 (Figure 6). This was the first ISDE Congress that was organized by the new ISDE management firm, International Conference Services (ICS), rather than being planned and hosted by a local ISDE leader. The ISDE President was Professor Jeffrey Peters (Figure 7). The opening ceremonies featured energetic dances by First Nations performers (Figure 8). The attendance was robust (Figure 9), the scientific program was diverse and interesting, and the weather was excellent. Like Venice, Italy, water taxis were a very popular mode of transportation in Vancouver (Figure 10). The venue for the gala dinner featured the spectacular waterside views that Vancouver is famous for (Figure 11). Side trips to Vancouver Island, Seattle, and Banff National Park were very popular.

The ISDE Board of Directors have identified the following strategic initiatives which will be addressed in future. If you have expertise and interest in participating in one of these initiatives, let us know. Please note task forces and ad hoc committees typically have 5 or less members, are active for the period in which work is being done and will be disbanded upon conclusion of the initiative.

• Increase the diversity of ISDE members by region, specialty and other categories identified in the Diversity and Inclusion Position Statement
• Increase opportunities for early career, trainees and fellows
• Establish global database of national training programs
• Develop future ISDE webinars and curriculum for a comprehensive Diseases of the Esophagus Certificate
• Recruit and promote leaders and experts from regions that have been under-represented in the past
