Myotomy in sigmoid megaesophagus: is it applicable? A systematic review and meta-analysis Editor's Choice - Free Article Achalasia is a rare esophageal primary motor dysfunction with no cure. The aim of the achalasia therapy is to palliate the symptoms, mainly dysphagia. Its treatment usually focuses on inferior esophageal sphincter disruption, leading to facilitated food transit to the stomach. It can be done by surgical myotomy or endoscopic procedures, such as cardia dilatation or peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). Read the full article.
Severity of GERD and disease progression Editor's Choice - Free Article Many factors may play a role in the severity and progression of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) since pathophysiology is multifactorial. Data regarding the progression of GERD are controversial: some reports of increased esophageal acid exposure (EAE) and mucosal damage were considered as evidence for a stable disease course, while others interprete these findings as disease progression. The aim of this study is to analyze a large patient-population with persisting symptoms indicative of GERD under protonpumpinhibitor-therapy and identify components characterizing disease severity and progression. The International Society for Disease of the Esophagus (ISDE) is pleased to announce the 2022 World Congress for Esophageal Diseases will be held in Tokyo, Japan from September 26-28, 2022.
In order to serve the esophageal community better the ISDE is working closely with the Japan Esophageal Society (JES), who will be hosting their annual meeting just before the ISDE World Congress at the same venue. The programs for both society meetings will be independent and delegates may choose to attend one meeting or both.
ISDE President, Prateek Sharma was quoted as saying “Japan is known for their cutting-edge treatments in the field of endoscopy and surgical procedures. This is a great opportunity for members and attendees from around the world and from Japan to observe, learn and share information on the esophagus.”
ISDE Executive Director, Mark Ferguson commented that “the 2022 Congress in Tokyo, Japan marks the 4th time this meeting has been held in this country and honors a longstanding relationship between ISDE and the Japanese Esophageal Society (JES). We anticipate this meeting will have the highest attendance numbers of any of our congresses to date.”
We look forward to welcoming you in Tokyo!
Paraconduit hiatal hernia after esophagectomy. Prevention—indication for surgery - surgical technique
DOTE Volume 34, Issue 9 | Editor's ChoiceFree Article
The laparoscopic part of minimal invasive esophagectomy (MIE) and gastric pull-up has become the preferred approach either in hybrid or total MIE. The advantages are well known, however, one shortcoming is the increased rate of postoperative paraconduit hiatal hernias (PHH) leading to enterothorax.
Exploring the concept of centralization of surgery for benign esophageal diseases: a Delphi based consensus from the European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus
Surgery for benign esophageal diseases may be complex, requiring specialist training, but currently, unlike oncologic surgery, it is not centralized. The aim of the study was to explore the opinion of European surgeons on the centralization of surgery for benign esophageal diseases. A web-based questionnaire, developed through a modified Delphi process, was administered. Read the full article.
