Division of Thoracic Surgery, University of Montreal, Gosselin Chair in Thoracic Surgical Oncology, University of Montreal, Montreal, QC, Canada

During his term as ISDE President, Dr. André Duranceau played a major role in the structural transformation of the administration of the society from Japan to Los Angeles. He encouraged the creation of a member supported endowment fund to guarantee the funding for the Annual Meeting. Dr. Duranceau also pushed for the integration of gastroenterologists into the ISDE, giving them equal opportunities and responsibilities throughout the administrative organization of the society and annual meeting.

The International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus has prepared a guidance statement on the management of GI-endoscopy and surgery during the COVID-19 outbreak.

There is an immediate need for ISDE members and the community at large to be fully informed about the indications and protections that may need to be taken. This is not intended to be a clinical guideline due to lack of current evidence, and this statement may be updated from time-to-time, as required.

    Find out more at:

    Sincerely

    Prateek Sharma, President

Meet the “Diseases of the Esophagus” Editors

Back by popular demand, this session is intended for those who have, or wish to have, their manuscripts published in the Disease of the Esophagus Journal.

Meet with and hear directly from the Editors Giovanni Zaninotto and Neil Gupta on such topics as my manuscript was rejected: why? And what now?; my manuscript was considered by needed major revisions. What now?; and the impact of manuscripts – what is it and why do journals care? This practical session will offer helpful tips for getting published.

Further session details will soon be available online at the ISDE 2020 congress website.

The Journal for Diseases of the Esophagus is the official journal of the ISDE and is the only journal where Gastroenterologists, Surgeons, Pediatric Surgeons, Pathologists, Radiologists, and Oncologists share their experiences and publish their research on esophageal diseases. The Impact Factor of the journal continues to increase and the journal receives more than 500 manuscripts each year.

    By Philippe Nafteux, MD PhD

Clinical Head Department of Thoracic Surgery, Director Esophageal Cancer Care program, University Hospitals Leuven, Leuven, Belgium

Prof. Lerut's presidency can be described as a key period for ISDE, introducing a number of important changes focusing on the society's evolvement and further establishment as a multidisciplinary society.

Based on his experience in Leuven but also of his fellowships with David Skinner and Tom DeMeester at the University of Chicago, USA, he quickly understood that multidisciplinary approach was the cornerstone for understanding and treating esophageal diseases and furthermore that international collaboration and networking would become increasingly important in the future. Both ideas would remain the beacons defining the way for his long and successful career. Professor Lerut has been awarded honorary fellowships in 14 prestigious organizations.

Explore the life and contributions of Antoon (Toni) Lerut, ISDE President from 2001-2004, a key period in which the goals of the society were clearly defined in Diseases of the Esophagus, Volume 33, Issue 1, January 2020 or download his biography here.
